Description
The book consists of classic works by the prominent Ukrainian ethnographer and anthropologist Fedir Kindratovych Vovk (1847–1918): “Anthropological Characteristics of the Ukrainian People” (1916), “Ethnographic Characteristics of the Ukrainian People” (1916), “Marriage ritual and ceremonies in Ukraine” (1890), “Sleigh in the funeral ritual in Ukraine” (1896). As a representative of the French anthropological school, Fedir Kindratovich used the latest research methodology and at one time wrote almost the first comprehensive study on the ethnography of Ukrainians. Characteristics of agricultural, farming, clothing, housing, customs, rituals, and beliefs of Ukrainians — a non-exhaustive list of topics you will find in the publication. Fedir Vovk dedicated a separate, fascinating work to the marriage ritual, analyzing in detail all the stages of the Ukrainian wedding. The publication is made in a new Ukrainian edition because the original texts were in French and Russian. The works are accompanied by notes of modern specialists (Olena Taran, Svitlana Makhovska, Yulia Buyskykh). The original illustrations have been preserved. The bibliography has been verified and clarified. There are nominal and subject indexes for the convenience of using the book. The book is an encyclopedia of traditional Ukrainian culture. It will be helpful for students, teachers of schools and universities, and anyone interested in Ukrainian culture. The publication is also beneficial from a practical point of view for those who want to follow the traditional Ukrainian wedding and other ceremonies.
