Description

Research by the prominent Ukrainian historian Valentyn Otamanovskyi (1893–1964) reveals the socio-economic dynamics of towns in Right-Bank Ukraine, tracing their evolution from the dilapidated, semi-agrarian urban centers of the Ruin era and the first quarter of the 18th century to the trade, craft, and manufacturing urban formations of the century’s second half.

The study analyzes the significance of royal privileges and the self-organization of urban communities in the struggle against the arbitrary rule of “starostas” and for the restoration of former rights. It also highlights the growing cultural demands of the urban population and the establishment of craft-based medicine, professional medical practice, and pharmacy services within the towns.
