Description

The reissue of the seminal two-volume work “Ukrainian Art” (1913, 1926) by Vadym (1876–1957) and Danylo (1877–1927) Shcherbakivskyi is being produced with the correction of inaccuracies found in the original editions. Original prints have been located for a significant number of the photographs in the second volume; these are preserved in the D. M. Shcherbakivskyi collection at the Scientific Archive of the Institute of Archaeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. To provide a more comprehensive overview of Vadym and Danylo Shcherbakivskyi’s contributions to the history of Ukrainian architecture, the two-volume set now includes their key works on the subject, as well as contemporary reviews of the original publication.

The text in the two-volume set is presented in both Ukrainian and French, as the Shcherbakivskyi brothers envisioned the work as one of the first presentations of Ukrainian folk art and architecture in Europe. Particular attention is paid to woodcarving from the Poltava region, featuring details such as sleighs, chests, carts, and honey-cake molds. The prominent Ukrainian artist, architect, and designer Vasyl Krychevskyi contributed to the design of the original edition, creating the covers for both volumes.
